When and Where to Witness the Celestial Spectacle
The Prime Viewing Zone
The path of totality, where viewers will experience the most dramatic effects of the eclipse, will stretch across 14 states from Oregon to South Carolina. Observers within this zone will be able to witness the moon completely block out the sun, creating an unforgettable celestial spectacle.
Partial Solar Eclipse
Areas outside the path of totality will still have the opportunity to witness a partial solar eclipse. In these regions, the moon will only partially cover the sun, resulting in a dimming of daylight and the appearance of a crescent-shaped sun.
Timing and Visibility
The eclipse will begin in the Pacific Northwest at 10:15 AM PDT and will reach totality over Oregon at 10:19 AM PDT. The path of totality will then move across the United States, reaching Maine by 2:48 PM EDT. Local conditions may affect the visibility of the eclipse, so it is recommended to check weather forecasts before planning your viewing experience.
Essential Safety Precautions for Eye Protection
Eye Protection: A Must-Have
Never look directly at the sun, even during a solar eclipse. The sun's intense light can permanently damage your retina, leading to vision loss or blindness. Always use certified eclipse glasses or solar filters to safely observe the eclipse. Avoid using homemade filters or sunglasses, as they may not provide adequate protection.
Viewing Safety Tips
If you're using eclipse glasses, ensure they meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Check for any damage or scratches on the lenses, and discard them if compromised. Use eclipse glasses throughout the entire eclipse, even during the total phase when the moon completely blocks the sun.
Avoid Indirect Viewing
Looking at the sun's reflection on water, mirrors, or other surfaces is equally dangerous. These indirect methods provide no protection against the sun's harmful rays. Always use certified eclipse glasses or solar filters when observing the eclipse, regardless of the viewing method.
